Neighboring units link through peptide bonds to form a chain. Many proteins are also made of such chains, which then fold into specific shapes. Peptides are usually shorter and proteins usually longer; in practice, naming also depends on structure and research conventions, so you cannot draw a boundary for all materials based on a single length number.

You can picture amino acids as beads of different colors. But a real peptide has three-dimensional shape and chemical properties, and the bead diagram only helps you understand the order of connections; it does not represent actual molecular proportions.

KPV, BPC-157, and LL-37: start with length

The three letters of KPV stand for lysine, proline, and valine, making it a peptide of three amino acids. BPC-157 usually refers to a sequence of fifteen amino acids; the name LL-37 relates to its thirty-seven amino acids and the two leucines at the start. The three are useful for comparing length, but length cannot be used to judge which one is more effective.

When reading a sequence, the letters are one-letter abbreviations for amino acids, not element symbols. Numbers may indicate sequence positions or may be part of a product name, so you cannot count every number as chain length.

Same few letters, different order: is it still the same peptide?

KPV and PVK use the same three amino acids but in a different order. It is like the same letters forming different words: order is part of a material's identity. When checking an ordered material, you need the full sequence, not just which amino acids are used.

Sequences are usually written from the N-terminus to the C-terminus, which you can first understand as the start and end of the chain. Copying a sequence backward does not automatically give you the original material.

Besides the product name, what else should you look at?

Whether the two ends are modified, whether a certain amino acid is the D form, whether there are disulfide bonds, and whether other groups are attached can all change the material. GHK and GHK-Cu should also be confirmed separately, because the latter involves copper coordination and cannot be understood as the full structure from just the three letters.

Salt form, purity, and the labeled amount per vial are other pieces of information. The name answers "what it is," purity and test documents help answer "what was tested," and the amount per vial answers "what the packaging states." The three cannot replace one another.

Looking at a product for the first time? Follow this order

First confirm the common name and full identity, then check specifications and packaging; next read the research-use information and related papers, and finally ask clearly what documentation can actually be provided. This is easier than starting directly from a string of English abbreviations, and it helps you spot whether a material suits your research.

Ask the three questions separately

Is it the peptide you intend to studyInformation to check: Sequence, terminal groups, modifications, and material form

How many vials are in this box, and how much is labeled per vialInformation to check: Specifications and packaging

Does it match the material used in the literatureInformation to check: Material description in the original paper and current material records

Teaching summary. Then check stereochemistry and modifications: is a residue D rather than L, and are the ends modified? Finally, check the supplied form, packaging and batch. Knowing the sequence alone is like knowing a book’s title without checking the edition.

Why does the same mass not mean the same number of molecules?

Take hypothetical peptides A and B with molar masses of 500 and 1000 g/mol, respectively. For 1 mg of each, convert 1 mg to 0.001 g and divide by the molar mass. A gives 0.000002 mol, or 2000 nmol; B gives 0.000001 mol, or 1000 nmol. A has twice as many molecules.
