A new study put GHK-Cu and an enzyme into a hydrogel, hoping the two would work together. The key to this idea is that the first step consumes oxygen, and the question is how the second step makes up for it.

A hydrogel is a carrier that keeps materials in a local area

A hydrogel can be understood as a soft network containing a large amount of water. Researchers put different components into it so they can act in the local environment; this is not the same kind of experiment as directly applying a bottle of copper peptide.

This 2026 paper studies a composite system containing GHK-Cu and glucose oxidase. When discussing the results, the carrier, the enzyme, and the copper peptide need to be viewed as a whole.

Step one: handling glucose also brings a new problem

Glucose oxidase, abbreviated GOX, can promote glucose oxidation. The study used it to consume local glucose while producing hydrogen peroxide.[1]

But this step also consumes oxygen. If the original environment is already short of oxygen, doing only this might further reduce the available oxygen. The study design therefore did not stop at the level of "using up the sugar."

Step two: using hydrogen peroxide to release oxygen

The GHK-Cu in the system takes part in the next reaction, promoting the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and releasing oxygen. The paper describes this effect as a catalytic reaction similar to that of catalase.[1]

Here it can be understood as the product of the previous step being used by the next step. But releasing some oxygen does not mean the system creates endless oxygen out of nothing, nor can it be directly equated with giving a patient oxygen or guaranteeing that the wound never lacks oxygen.

The two-step reaction in the composite system

GOX stepGlucose oxidation; consumes oxygen and produces hydrogen peroxide

→

Step involving GHK-CuPromotes the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and releases oxygen

Supplementary illustration for reading, omitting intermediate chemical details; it does not mean the system produces unlimited oxygen, nor is it a patient treatment procedure.

Why also observe bacteria and blood vessels?

Wound repair involves infection, local inflammation, new blood vessel formation, and tissue growth. A chemical reaction working does not necessarily mean the tissue will recover, so the study also evaluated antibacterial, antioxidant, blood vessel formation, and repair-related performance.

These results belong to preclinical research on this composite material. To know how much each component contributes, conditions such as no GOX, no GHK-Cu, or carrier only need to be compared; the combined performance cannot all be attributed to the copper peptide alone.

Before reproducing an experiment, material information matters more than the name

To do similar research, one needs to know the composition of GHK-Cu, the enzyme activity, the hydrogel formula, the local pH, and how the components are released. Writing only "use copper peptide" makes it hard for others to repeat under the same conditions.

What is interesting about this work is that it puts two interrelated problems into one set of reactions to handle. It provides a design idea for composite materials; it is not yet a plan that can be directly copied for daily wound care.

Would directly mixing copper peptide and enzyme give the same result?

Not necessarily. Their ratio, activity, environment, and carrier structure all affect the reaction, and the hydrogel may also change how the components remain and are released. The composite system needs to be verified according to the complete formula.

When doing experiments, you can first check separately: whether the enzyme still has activity, whether the copper peptide identity is clear, and whether the carrier affects detection. Only then observe the combined reaction and tissue performance to know where the problem occurs.

When reading this, remember this point

GOX also consumes oxygen while consuming glucose; GHK-Cu takes part in the subsequent reaction to release oxygen. The paper studies the entire composite hydrogel.

Related research materials

View materials and analytical information

The GHK-Cu catalog page can be used to check copper peptide research materials.
