Peptide factory expansion: why usable output does not increase immediately

Construction starting on a new plant sounds like more products will be available right away. CordenPharma's recent expansion update shows there is still a distance between the two: building completion, process operation and stable supply each need to be achieved separately.

What actual changes did this announcement bring?

In the company update on September 28, after acquiring AmbioPharm, the capabilities in North Augusta and Shanghai joined its network, and more than 400 employees joined. A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new expansion project in North Augusta, which is planned to begin operation in early 2028.

The locations, scale and timing here all belong to CordenPharma's project; they are not NHD's plant, and cannot be used to infer NHD's existing inventory.

Synthesis capacity: why does a larger area not mean more output?

Peptides usually go through synthesis, cleavage, purification, separation and testing. Being able to handle more material at one step does not mean every later step can keep up.[1]

It is like adding more stoves to a kitchen: washing, plating and serving can still become bottlenecks. To judge capacity, look at the whole process, not just one reaction vessel or one new building.

Different synthesis routes: what problem does each solve?

The company mentions capabilities such as solid-phase, liquid-phase and fragment-related synthesis. Solid phase is connecting amino acids step by step on a support; fragment routes may first make shorter parts and then connect them together.[1]

Route choice depends on sequence difficulty, scale, impurities and purification. A name that sounds newer is not suitable for every peptide; small-scale research and large-scale supply of the same sequence may also require different methods.

Why does new equipment still need a preparation period?

After equipment is installed, it needs to be confirmed that it works as required; the production process must be repeatable, the analytical methods must be able to identify quality problems, and personnel and the supply chain must also coordinate.

Therefore, the groundbreaking date, the start-of-operation date and the stable commercial supply date cannot be mixed into one time point. The plans in the announcement may also be affected by engineering and project progress.

When research customers ask for a quote, how can they ask more effectively?

First state the sequence, required quantity, use, purity and documentation requirements, then ask which steps determine the lead time. If you will scale up in the future, you should also say so in advance, so the route and repeat supply needs can be evaluated.

This industry news reflects the need of large peptide projects for capability and geographic layout. It does not provide a guarantee that all suppliers' lead times will be shortened, and even less can it be directly turned into an inventory promise.

If a supplier has a large reactor, does that guarantee my peptide will be easy to make?

Reactor volume is only one condition. Sequences that aggregate easily, are difficult to connect, or have impurities that are hard to separate can all affect delivery. Equipment suitable for some peptides does not guarantee that all sequences will go equally smoothly.

When asking for a quote, clearly state the quality requirements you care about most, for example whether a specific analytical method is needed or whether a certain impurity must be controlled. The plan you get this way is usually more useful than only asking "how much per gram."
