Retatrutide and liver fat: what an 82.4% reduction does—and does not—mean

A liver-fat result is easy to mistake for a body-weight result. This study used MRI to measure fat inside the liver. Here is how to read the reported 82.4% relative reduction, what it says about the tested clinical preparation, and which questions it leaves open.

Liver fat and liver scarring are different questions

Fat can accumulate in the liver. Scarring, also called fibrosis, is a different feature of liver disease. A study that measures fat does not automatically measure how much scarring has reversed. Read the test and the endpoint first: a liver-fat result answers a more specific question than the phrase “improved liver health.”

What the study measured

A 2024 phase 2a substudy included 98 participants whose liver fat was at least 10% at baseline. It was part of a longer obesity trial. The main substudy endpoint was the relative change in liver fat at 24 weeks, measured using MRI-based assessment. The original publication describes the study groups and imaging methods.

The number behind the headline

Across the four retatrutide groups, the mean relative changes were −42.9%, −57.0%, −81.4% and −82.4%; placebo was +0.3%. These are group estimates under a defined clinical protocol. The diagram highlights the largest reported reduction and the placebo estimate, rather than pretending to show individual scans or a universal response.

Relative change needs a starting value

Here is an illustrative calculation, not a participant result. If liver fat started at 20% and fell by 82.4% relative to that starting value, the final value would be 20% × 0.176 = 3.52%. The absolute decrease would be 16.48 percentage points. This explains why an 82.4% relative reduction does not mean subtracting 82.4 percentage points from a scan.

What remains unanswered by that number

The study supports a liver-fat effect in its population. That number alone does not establish reversal of fibrosis, elimination of every liver risk or the same response in a different population. Imaging is useful because it can quantify one feature repeatedly. It is still one feature, not a complete description of liver disease.

Why this topic belongs with the Retatrutide product

Retatrutide is researched as a triple-receptor agonist. Our triple-agonist evidence guide explains that background. The NHD Retatrutide page provides the related catalogue entry. For laboratory work, specify the molecular form and analytical scope; the clinical MRI result does not certify a catalogue batch or establish its suitability for human use.

A liver-fat percentage is not a body-weight percentage

Check What it tells you
What was measured? The study measured liver fat using imaging. This is a measurement inside one organ, not the proportion of total body weight lost.
How was the change calculated? Check whether the number is a relative change from the starting liver-fat value or a percentage-point change. They use different denominators.
What material was tested? The clinical preparation and protocol belong to the trial. They do not verify catalog research material.

For laboratory procurement, review the related NHD catalog material and confirm the selected variant, amount basis and available records. Send a research enquiry with those requirements; the cited experiment is not a test of an NHD lot.
