Explore how metal binding, peptide length and stereochemistry affect the interpretation of an LL-37 antimicrobial study.

More than a test of adding metal
The 2026 paper compared full-length LL-37, its C-terminal fragment DF-12 and the corresponding all-D analogue df-12. These differ in length or stereochemistry. The researchers investigated metal coordination alongside antibacterial, antifungal and antibiofilm activity; the materials should not be treated as interchangeable.
Copper and zinc follow different binding pathways
Near physiological pH, the abstract describes binding involving the N-terminal amino group and a carboxylate donor. At higher pH, copper progressively involves backbone amide nitrogen donors, whereas zinc forms hydroxo-containing species. Coordination describes metal-binding arrangements. Simply mixing ingredients does not prove that one uniquely defined complex has formed.

Similar structures can behave differently
Truncation reduced metal-binding affinity. Reversing chirality had different consequences for copper and zinc coordination. Results for a short fragment therefore cannot be transferred directly to full-length LL-37. Specify whether an order concerns the full peptide, a fragment or an all-D analogue.
Read antimicrobial findings with their assay conditions
Full-length LL-37 showed strong antimicrobial and broad-spectrum antibiofilm activity in the reported experiments, generally enhanced by metal coordination. That is not a universal result for every organism or concentration. Quantitative comparisons need the same organism, endpoint and assay conditions, rather than values selected from unrelated tables.
Why the figure is a study schematic
The abstract supports the comparison and broad findings but does not provide enough detail to reconstruct every quantitative antimicrobial result. The figure therefore shows the materials compared, without inventing inhibition rates, minimum inhibitory concentrations or error bars. Use the original tables before quoting a specific numerical effect.
Match the enquiry to the material
The linked LL-37 page concerns catalog material. A metal-coordination project should separately specify the peptide form, modifications and intended coordination conditions. Information about free LL-37 does not replace preparation and characterization of the required metal complex.
