SS-31-Modified Nanoparticles: Reading a Delivery Experiment

By NHD Technical TeamPublished

See how SS-31, GGA and PLGA were combined in a zebrafish study, and why the findings differ from free-peptide effects.

Identify the carrier, cargo and surface modification

The 2017 study used PLGA nanoparticles carrying geranylgeranylacetone, GGA, with SS-31 conjugated to the particles. PLGA forms the carrier; GGA is the cargo; SS-31 contributes to the investigated mitochondrial-targeting design. The parcel analogy helps explain the components, but does not imply perfectly precise biological delivery.

Why zebrafish hair cells were studied

The researchers used zebrafish lateral-line sensory hair cells to investigate gentamicin-related damage, uptake and survival. This is an experimental sensory-cell model, not a human hearing trial. Its findings cannot be converted into an expected degree of hearing recovery in people.

SS-31 delivery: combining the materials
Study-design schematic. Findings concern a drug-delivery system, not the isolated action of free SS-31.

Delivery and protection are separate endpoints

Accumulation near mitochondria differs from a final protective outcome. The paper investigated localization, gentamicin uptake, mitochondrial membrane potential and hair-cell survival. A change in one endpoint cannot stand in for the others, and clearer localization does not guarantee better performance in every functional test.

Why empty-carrier controls matter

The abstract reports favorable hair-cell survival with GGA-loaded, SS-31-modified particles, whereas blank formulations did not show the same protective potency. This distinguishes cargo, carrier and surface-modification contributions. The complete formulation's outcome should not all be assigned to free SS-31.

What the figure does and does not show

The figure explains how the materials and model fit together. It does not estimate survival percentages from published image heights. Before quoting a numerical result, obtain the original values and check treatment groups, observation times and counting methods.

Match the material request to the study

The SS-31 page concerns catalog research peptide. A project requiring SS-31-conjugated PLGA particles needs separate conjugation, loading and characterization specifications. The article does not establish that catalog SS-31 has the delivery performance of the published formulation.
